Work Retreat

We had a staff retreat a couple weeks ago - very fun. we went to a nice little resort with a rustic feel. we had some meetings and playtime, we also had a nice candle ceremony where we shared praises or confessions with each other...it was a sobering time to think of the ways we have been blessed and ways we have hurt others (an interesting conondrum). let's just say that it was cathartic and healing in many ways for some, and a time of reflection and thankfulness.

we also decided to visit one of Compassion International's shelters for Karen Hilltribe children whose parents are migrant workers and can't afford to take care of them, or kids who are at risk. there are about 200 children (and limited staff!) living there with the bare minimum. it is in Mae Jam, out in the fields and quiet from the streets. the children were so beautiful and so thankful for our visit. they were playing sports and greeting us - it was sweet.

we went with the intention of playing games and bringing gifts, but we got so much more! they had planned a worship service for us - complete with Karen attire and songs.

they were so full of praise and gladness - it really reminds us how fortunate we are with our material things, but that we need to make sure our hearts and minds are focused on what is true and virtuous and holy, not just our own desires and wants. these children probably desire stuff, but they are also content with what they have - are most of us??! it was a moving experience to hear them worship with delight and passion - it was the highlight of the night!

*and that i was 'game leader'! i had 200 kids (teens and children) playing 'Crocidile', hula hoop pass, Knots...it was pretty funny! hot and sweaty and buggy - but AWESOME fun! :) i got to talk to a bunch of the teen girls (with some translating help of course!) and they are alot like teens in the states too - like to dance, sing, draw, read magazines, decorate their rooms...such sweet and beautiful girls - inside and out!

it was a great retreat and it was nice that it wasn't just about us, but helping others. I will also be sending them some of my donation money from all of you to help their shelter out. Please pray for this shelter and the children - that they will be filled with the Lords spirit always and attain the needs they have (new facilities, more food, more staff)
